Organizational ambidexterity is the simultaneous orchestration of exploitation of the core business alongside exploration in new digital business opportunities to unlock trapped value.
The discussion paper explores the importance of organizational ambidexterity in digital innovation for a successful Industrie 4.0 pivot. It shows examples of how leading connected enterprises are honing in on ambidexterity and business model transformation to build organizational culture and achieve Industrie 4.0 objectives; it makes recommendations on how organizations can proceed.
The paper was created by participants of the platform's working group on "Digital Business Models in Industrie 4.0". It was initiated by the inspiring Prof. Dr. Svenja Falk (Accenture), head of the working group. It was developed in the discussion of Laura Hulme, Accenture, Bianca Illner, VDMA, Lilian Matischok, Robert Bosch GmbH and Julia Duwe, TRUMPF Werkzeugmaschinen GmbH + Co. KG.

About the Plattform Industrie 4.0 working group on "Digital Business Models in Industry 4.0":
Data, platforms, innovative technologies and new customer expectations are changing models of value creation for manufacturing companies. New digital business models emerge and existing ones change. Understanding mechanisms, showing opportunities and making recommendations—that is the mission of the working group on "Digital Business Models in Industrie 4.0". First, the working group analyzes the basic mechanisms of digital business models. On this basis, it determines opportunities and challenges. Finally, the working group on Politics and Business shows ways in which the potential of digital business models can be exploited.
